The neighbourhood

In the heart of the Carmes neighbourhood

Just 800 metres from Hôtel Le Magnan, on Rue Carreterie, La Terrasse du Clocher welcomes you to the Carmes neighbourhood, in Avignon’s historic centre. This charming apartment is on the first floor of a small 18th-century stone building with no lift, an authentic setting for your stay.

The Augustinian bell tower

The Augustinian bell tower is one of the few surviving remains of the former Augustinian convent. Built in the 14th century in the distinctive Avignon Gothic style, it leans slightly as a result of an earthquake in 1909. A clock was first installed in the tower in 1497, and it has marked the rhythm of neighbourhood life ever since.

The Carmes neighbourhood

The Carmes neighbourhood takes its name from the Carmelite convent built in the 13th century, whose cloister and church still overlook the square. Once home to a scrap-metal market, this lively square now hosts a food market on Saturdays and a flea market on Sundays.
